HAVE YOU BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE?

Facts About Degenerative Disc Diseaseundefined

Degenerative disc disease occurs over time with age as the cartilage in your body changes. This disease can also occur from repetitive strains, such as in physically demanding work, or through an accident or serious injury that weaken the cartilage.

Changes usually start long before they can be detected in imaging techniques, such as x-rays, yet it is still important that symptoms are treated quickly to prevent additional wear. Our Non-Surgical Spine Center can look at the underlying causes of your symptoms and treat the root causes of degenerative disc disease before they become truly debilitating.

Common Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease

The structural changes of your discs includes the decrease in water and protein. Disc dehydration, or “desiccation,” is often given in MRI reports as an underlying cause of degenerative disc disease.

This “drying out” has a number of negative effects, including:

  • Reduced shock absorption
  • Pain from normal compression of the spine
  • The inability to handle everyday stress or weight on your spine
  • Herniated discs and associated pain
  • Spinal stenosis, or the narrowing of the spine’s canal
  • Spondylolisthesis, or discs and vertebra slippage
  • Retrolisthesis, or backward slippage

Common Symptoms & Pain

No two patients experience the same type and level of pain however, there are a few common symptoms that our Bolingbrook non-surgical disc and laser center often sees. When the disease affects the lumbar spine, patients most often report light pain that will occasionally flare up.

In addition, symptoms are generally:

  • Located in the lower back, hips, and upper legs
  • Generally worse when sitting upright
  • Worsened by movements like bending or sitting
