Suffering From Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal Stenosis and What You Should Know

The narrowing of the spinal canal, known as spinal stenosis, is common in older adults and results from normal wear over the course of a lifetime. The nerve roots and spinal cord are gradually compressed, leading to pain and a number of other conditions.

These problems vary based on what nerves are affected and can include:

  • Pain and numbness in the legs, shoulders, neck, and/or arms
  • Cramping
  • Difficulties walking without assistance
  • Loss of sensation in the extremities
  • Bladder and bowel problems

Common Causes of Spinal Stenosis

Generally pain will gradually worsen in the legs or lower back, especially with more strenuous walking, such as going uphill. This pain is often relieved when the patient sits or leans forward to provide more space in the spinal cord.

These progressively degenerative symptoms can occur because of any of the following:

  • Bone spurs in the spinal column
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Calcification of the ligaments
  • Bulging discs
  • Herniated discs
  • Bony growths on the joints

What Are the Risks & Conditions Behind Spinal Stenosis?

The risk of spinal stenosis increases in people who are born with a narrower spinal canal, are over 50 years old, or have had previous spinal conditions or surgeries. In addition, women are more likely to develop spinal stenosis than men.

Certain conditions can cause or exacerbate spinal stenosis. These include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Inflammatory spondyloarthritis
  • Tumors in the spine
  • Injury, accidents, or trauma
  • Paget's disease
  • Past surgeries
